Build a Custom Home to Suit Your New Lifestyle
Building a custom home is the perfect opportunity to design a space that suits all of your unique needs. From location, to size, to overall amenities, no matter the lifestyle you can design your custom home to accommodate exactly who you are.
Location & Community
Before you can start the process of building a custom home, you need to think about what you’re looking for in a community and what kind of location will suit your lifestyle. You’re taking the time to design a custom home, and you want it to suit your lifestyle for years to come, so it’s important to look into the future a bit even if it seems far away. If you have a family or you’re thinking of starting one in the future, the community will play a large role in your decision. Consider the schools in the area and if there are secondary school options for when the children get older. Although it’s nice to have a variety of age groups in your community, if you have a family, you’ll want to choose a community with other families in it so you and your children can develop a social group. The location also plays a huge role when it comes to finding a home within your budget. Young first-time homebuyers may want to be close to the action of the city, but it’s much more affordable to live in the areas surrounding major cities, as you’ll get more for your money.
Space
Once you have decided on a location that suits your needs, it’s important to consider how much space you will need to accommodate your lifestyle. First, you should consider how many bedrooms you will need now and in the future. Young children can share rooms, but as they get older, it’s nice for them to have their own spaces. If you have a tight-knit extended family, you should consider adding one or two guest bedrooms into your design so that they have somewhere to stay when they come to visit you. There are other considerations beyond bedrooms as well. After all, your home should be your sanctuary, so you want to have space for all the amenities that you require to be comfortable. If you need to have a home office, you’ll want to allot space for that, so you don’t have to cram a desk into a tight corner of your home. It’s also important to consider how big of a yard you would like to have when you are searching for the perfect lot. Try to develop a rough estimate of how many square feet your home will be so you can have an accurate idea of how large your front and back yard can be when choosing a lot.
Transit & Commute
You may think you’ve found the perfect lot for your new custom home, but if the transit and commute don’t suit your lifestyle you could soon regret your decision. If you rely on transit to get to work and grocery shop, you’ll want to ensure that it is easily accessible and is still able to conveniently suit your needs. It’s a good idea to do a transit test run before you make your final decision on the location of your dream home. It’s one thing for transit to be accessible, but if you have to take three or four different buses to get to work, you likely won’t be happy. If you don’t rely on transit to get to work, then you’ll want to consider your commute. You should consider how far the commute is and also do a bit of investigation into the route or routes you will be taking. Again, the best way to find out if the commute from your new custom home to your workplace will suit your lifestyle is to do a trial run. Also, consider what the roads will be like in the winter. We all know Ottawa is known for its aggressive winters, so if the route you’ll be using to commute seems like it will be a nightmare in the winter, you may want to consider a different location.
Amenities
Although it may sound cliché, when it comes to designing the amenities and entertainment spaces in your custom home, the only limitation is your imagination. This is your chance to really cater your custom home design to your lifestyle and make your dream home a reality. If you like to entertain, you’ll want to design your spaces to be functional for large groups of people. The main areas to consider when designing entertainment spaces are the kitchen, the basement, and the backyard. Putting a large island in your kitchen is a great way to create a communal space that can accommodate a large group of people. If you don’t entertain frequently enough to justify tailoring a common living space to accommodate large groups, consider allocating the basement as your entertainment space. Basement bars are always a hit, and they contain noise levels better than above-ground spaces, so you can socialize well into the night without upsetting your neighbors. If you are planning on creating a backyard oasis for hosting all of your dinner parties and barbecues, then you’ll want to look at the size of the space, but also its surroundings. If there is little privacy, it may put a damper on your backyard parties, so you’ll want to look for a space with lots of tree coverage or consider putting in privacy fences.
