Home Features to Inspire Your Custom Design
Most people that build a custom home do so because they get to personalize it and make it uniquely theirs. It really is the main appeal of designing and building a custom home. It gives the homeowners the ability to carefully select each feature and tailor every element to their liking. Some people know exactly what they want, down to the last detail, while others don’t have a clue where to start. If you fall into the latter category, we’ve got some suggestions that we hope will inspire your custom home design.
As home builders, we have the pleasure of seeing and creating all kinds of fun features and cool details that our clients come up with. We get to exercise our creativity and have fun bringing their visions to life. Here are a few of the things we’ve seen in some of our clients’ custom home designs.
Tile Bath Mat
Starting with a cool yet practical one, a tile bath mat is a great addition to any custom home bathroom. Unlike traditional fabric mats that get damp and harbour bacteria, tile bath mats offer a clean and hygienic alternative. Not only is a tile bath mat easier to clean and maintain, it also adds a modern and stylish touch to the bathroom decor. Tile bath mats can be customized to fit any bathroom aesthetic which makes them a versatile and practical choice.
Hidden/Secret Room
One of our favourites is a hidden or secret room. You know a client is going to be a lot of fun to work with when they request a secret room. It’s a totally unique and exciting feature to add to a custom home. Whatever you use it for, a hidden room brings mystery and imagination into your home. No one but you will know it’s there and you can even make a secret entrance. However you go about it, we love the idea of designing a home with a hidden room!
Wine Cellar
If you or someone in your family is a wine lover, why not install a wine cellar? There are so many ways to design and lay out a wine cellar that you can make it totally unique and suited to your needs. And contrary to what you might believe, you don’t need to have a huge home or a ton of space to add a wine cellar. We can install wine cellars in tiny spaces and awkward little spaces and make the most of every square foot.
Dual-Entry Shower
The addition of a dual-entry shower to your ensuite can create a level of luxury and function you never knew was possible. A dual-entry shower is a shower that has two doors or two ways to get into it. Some custom home designs have a shower connecting his and hers bathrooms while others just have a large shower with two entries. Dual-entry showers typically have two showerheads, two sets of controls, and ample space for two people. It’s the perfect way for couples to save time in the morning or enjoy a relaxing shower together. It’s also a useful feature for families with children who share a bathroom.
Multi-Sided Fireplace
If you plan to have a fireplace in your custom home, consider a multi-sided one. There are fireplaces available that are double and triple-sided. This means they can be used to divide a space and be seen from multiple angles in different rooms. A multi-sided fireplace creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere but it also adds functionality and depth to a space. It can serve as an interesting focal point that can be enjoyed from multiple areas. Plus, it can heat more than one room at a time.
Open Kitchen Shelving
Another feature that’s quite trendy these days is open kitchen shelving. Particularly if you like open-concept homes or the minimalist look, open shelving could make a practical yet stylish addition to your kitchen. Open shelving provides usable storage and the opportunity to display decorative items or dishes. Open kitchen shelving can also make a small kitchen seem bigger and more open as it allows light to flow freely through the space. However, if you’d rather hide your kitchenware, open shelving is probably not for you!
Indoor Courtyard & Tree
We love this one! If you’re looking to add more greenery to your space, you can place plants throughout your custom home or use earthy tones and design elements. But if you really want to bring nature into your home, incorporate an indoor courtyard and plant a tree in it. You could build a garden in the courtyard or just put a potted tree in the space. Either way, an indoor courtyard simulates the outdoors and brings a ton of light into your house. It also makes for a stunning focal point that you can use to grow other plants. Ultimately, an indoor courtyard makes your home greener in that it can reduce energy consumption, improve air quality, and let you grow your own food.
Custom Cabinets
Would you prefer cabinets that are silent when you close (slam) them? While cabinets might not be your main concern in your custom home design, they’re important to think about. Kitchens are typically a major gathering point in most houses, meaning you spend a lot of time there. Kitchen cabinets get a lot of use, so perhaps you want to consider how you can make your kitchen and cabinets more suited to your life. There are so many styles, colours, and finishes that you can really use cabinetry to add to your home decor. Plus, there are ways to make your cabinets more functional for your needs and space. You might go with pull-out drawers or shelves, specialized compartments, slam-resistant hardware, etc. You can select materials that are more eco-friendly, more modern or more traditional. Your options are endless!
Second Floor Laundry Room
The last feature on our list is another one that we just love. When you think about doing laundry, you might shutter – it never ends, right? But, having a laundry room on the second floor with all the bedrooms would make it a lot easier. That’s why smart homeowners who design a multi-level home put their laundry room on the same level as the rooms. Since that’s where all the laundry goes and ends up, it just makes sense! A second-floor laundry room means you don’t have to trudge up and down the stairs with heavy baskets of laundry. It’s certainly something to think about.
