Benefits of Living in Manotick
Interested in living in Ottawa, but tired of looking for your dream home? Consider building a custom home in Manotick with Omega Homes. Manotick fell off of the real estate map for a little bit, but it has recently established itself as an in-demand location for prospective homeowners. The quiet country village has moved into the 21st century, but it still retains its historic charm. It’s less than a 30-minute commute to Downtown Ottawa, but its quiet ambience allows you to fully disconnect, which is just one of the many benefits of living in Manotick.
A Bit About Manotick
Manotick, Ontario is a rural community located roughly 25km southwest of downtown Ottawa. It is part of the Rideau-Goulbourn Ward, and it’s located right alongside the Rideau River. The name Manotick comes from the Ojibwa word for island in the river because a large portion of the community is actually an island located in the middle of the Rideau River. Manotick is quickly becoming a sought-after location for prospective homeowners because there is a finite number of homes that can be built there due to the original city planning. This means that over time property values will increase dramatically. Residents love living in Manotick because they can easily commute to work and enjoy the luxuries of the city, but when they come home, they can relax and feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
The Community
Manotick only has a population of 4,500 people, which has led to everyone in the community becoming very close. There is a mix of people who were born and raised there, and people who moved there to escape the hectic lifestyle of the city. The community is mostly made up of families and empty nesters because it has become somewhat exclusive, and it doesn’t necessarily offer the busy lifestyle some younger couples are looking for. The Manotick Village and Community Association prides itself on making Manotick a wonderful place to live for people of all ages and interests. They work to make the community more accessible, but they also put on several recreational events and activities throughout the year.
Education
Although it’s a small community, it has quickly become known for its excellent schools, with a variety of options in both the public and catholic school boards. Manotick Public School and St. Leonard Catholic School offer both English and French teaching for children who are in elementary school. Students who are in high school can attend St. Mark Catholic High School right in Manotick, or The South Carleton High School in nearby Richmond. Children who aren’t old enough for elementary school have the most options though, including, Manotick Nursery School, Manotick Montessori, and My Little Preschool. If those aren’t the right fit for your child, there are many more located nearby in Barrhaven and Riverpark South.
Outdoor Recreation
When it comes to spending time outdoors, residents living in Manotick have an endless list of activities to choose from. As we mentioned, the village is located right along the Rideau river, which makes it the perfect place to enjoy fishing, boating, and watersports. Boaters can even travel down to Lake Ontario through the connecting waterways, which is pretty incredible. It’s also a great place to live if you enjoy golf because the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club, and The Rideau View Golf Club, are both located right in Manotick. If golf isn’t your thing, there are several walking and biking trails and a handful of waterfront parks. Although the average age in the community is 40-60, there’s also a wide variety of activities for children, including organized sports teams, outdoor public pools, splash pads, and parks. There truly is something for everyone living in Manotick.
Shopping & Dining
Residents living in Manotick can meet most of their day-to-day needs without having to leave the village. As the community begins to grow, more and more stores are being added, but residents love the small grocery stores and boutique stores that give the village its rustic charm. That being said, there is also a Loblaws and a 90,000 square foot shopping area complete with a Home Hardware, Beer Store, Pharmacy, and more. Barrhaven is also located close by if you need to visit any big box stores that aren’t in the village. When it comes to dining out, there are several restaurants and pubs to choose from, and most are unique to Manotick. The Black Dog Bistro and Zizi’s Kitchen are some of the local favourites, but there are also bigger names like Kelly’s Landing in the area. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the number of options you have for a night out in such a small village.
Festivals, Events, & Celebrations
One of the biggest attractions in Manotick is Watson’s Mill. The village was established around the mill around 1859, and to this day, you can still watch the river’s current turn the large turbine on Sunday afternoons in the spring and summer. There are several seasonal festivals and celebrations that are put on for those living in Manotick and visitors to the village. In the summer, they put on a festival for Dickinson’s Day, which started as a day to celebrate the town’s founder Moss Kent Dickinson. The weekend-long festival includes a parade, fireworks, live music, and activities for children like wagon rides. During the fall, there is the annual Harvest Festival and, in the winter, you can enjoy all the festivities of Shiverfest.
